Stocks retreat as profit-taking hits major indices
A market slide followed two weeks of gains with the Dow down 118.72 to 8,872.07 and the Nasdaq composite off 17.95 to 1,376.59 as trading volume eased. Saks Inc. narrowed its quarterly loss to 14 cents a share on $1.24 billion in sales, beating estimates. Gas prices fall slightly across Iowa in August survey
Iowa gas prices eased by about two cents over the past month with an average of 1.35 dollars per gallon for unleaded regular. Fort Dodge topped the list at 1.45 while Davenport was lowest at 1.27, Cedar Rapids up to 1.34 and Iowa City at 1.40. Propane averaged 72 cents per gallon and No 2 heating oil 95 cents with heating oil likely to rise in September. U S propane inventories are 9.1 percent higher than last year.
