F A Fuzzy Ahring 60, long time Cedar Rapids police officer and meter supervisor, filed nomination papers for public safety commissioner. He retires Oct 1 after 23 years on the force and joins two rivals Charles Gould and George Engelmann in the Oct 22 city primary. Ahring is a St Louis native, veteran of both world wars, and longtime local veteran and fraternal member.
Dennis Markham of 1560 Second Avenue SE was fined $25 and costs after pleading guilty to failing to keep his vehicle under control. He drove over the curb onto Coe College campus at 9 12 p m Tuesday, blew out all four tires, and allegedly fled the scene before being found in a nearby parked car. He also received a $10 fine for intoxication.

The Iowa Highway Commission tabled Hargrave Construction Company of Cedar Rapids request to alter asphalt grade on a Linn and Iowa counties surfacing project by a 3 to 2 vote. In other actions, it approved hiring a stenographer, allocated 707 220 for a Charles City highway project, set bridge limits to allow damage claims, and discussed rerouting two highways between Muscatine and Davenport to switch Iowa 22 with U S 61, pending federal approval.
The Senate Public Works Committee voted 7 to 6 to kill a bill regulating billboards along the new 41,000 mile interstate system. The decision ends a prolonged congressional fight over advertising signs beside the highways.
Hoffa and Brennan said they profit from race betting using joint funds and defended Michigan race track investments as profitable and repaid. He asserted Teamsters units influence officer elections and that Michigan members would back anti track candidates when interests clash. He also argued a unit’s money can influence other regions during labor disputes.
Ossian man Walter Lestina, a Milwaukee railroad section foreman, suffered a broken arm Tuesday while cranking a railroad motor car.
Richard D. Richards, 28, of Cedar Rapids, pled not guilty in district court to a four year old check forgery charge. The case stems from a $420 check forged February 14, 1953. Richards had been released from Anamosa Reformatory after serving about half a seven year sentence for obtaining money by false pretenses. Reformatory officials recommended leniency, noting he was a model prisoner.
Carl Allen Harris a 16 year old admitted extortionist faced a car theft charge in Linn district court. A true information accuses him of stealing a car owned by Edmund A Lacomb Jr on Aug 8 from a downtown parking lot and involved in an accident at A avenue and Twelfth street NE. He had not entered a plea by noon Wednesday and also faces an extortion charge for attempting to extort 2500 from banker Marvin R Selden.
The Linn county board of supervisors rezoned two adjacent land strips along the north side of new highway 30 near Mt. Vernon from rural to light industrial and business districts. Owners include Fred H. McLaughlin Leo Marshek Ellen Marshek Grace West and Gail West Hall. The board also approved a second quarter 1957 fee report showing $594 in total fees collected by Justice of the Peace M. H. Biddick.
Marvin A. McMurrin, 21, of Cedar Rapids route 3, was sentenced to 90 days in Linn county jail after pleading guilty to giving beer to a 16-year-old. The incident occurred August 10 when the youths were riding in a car that later rolled over north of Cedar Rapids.
Virgil S. Richardson of 1517 Sixth Street Cedar Rapids received a seven year prison term and a bench parole on a false check charge. Richardson pleaded guilty before Judge Charles Penningroth to passing a $2350 check for a sports car in Cedar Rapids on June 13 and was released to the Colorado state board of parole.
In district court three wills were probated. Herman A. Rieke died Aug 3 naming his wife Sarah as sole heir and executrix without bond. Leslie H. Biddick died Aug 6 naming his wife Myrtle as sole heir. Dale C. Biddick was confirmed executor with a $5,000 bond. Owen L. Morris died Aug 8 naming four children Margaret M. Snell Marion E. Day Morgan and Merlin. the two sons were confirmed executors without bond.
New York news reports Union president Woodruff Randolph will retire from the International Typographical Union on July 15 when his term ends. Randolph has led the union since 1944 and announced the retirement during a Wednesday address.
Hollywood makeup man Percival Westmore, 52, was removed from danger at a private sanitarium after police said he attempted suicide at his home Tuesday night by swallowing sleeping pills. He survived the self inflicted act.

McEnany fled through an alley behind a newspaper plant with Reed pursuing and firing the fatal shot. Witnesses Wer back Reed’s account that a direct hit killed McEnany as he collapsed near the Stevenson Ford lot. The investigation and coroner will hold an inquest at Monahan funeral home with a three man jury. Dorrance L McEnany, WWII veteran, is survived by three sons and a sister. The Swab Motor Company at 845 Second Avenue SE has taken the agency for the Simca automobile made in Paris France. The car achieves 30 to 40 miles per gallon and a top speed of 82 mph. It features a 4 cylinder overhead valve water cooled engine 48 horsepower 12 volt system reclining seats synchronized transmission and a 13 cubic foot trunk. The Simca measures 162 inches long 61 inches wide and 63 inches high with ten style choices.
W. M. Reynolds of St. Louis regional controller for the post office department met Cedar Rapids officials on Wednesday to discuss a new package report. The form targets offices with annual receipts of a million dollars or more and provides cost based data to help postmasters evaluate manpower use and future budgeting.
The Rev. Lamont C. Belle Farmer Higley, formerly of Cedar Rapids, died Wednesday morning in Tampa Florida after a brief illness. She was widow of William M Higley who died five years earlier.

Eliza beth F. Neary a longtime Cedar Rapids resident died Tuesday after a lingering illness at 71. She was a member of Mother Cabrini circle at All Saints church. Surviving: a son Raymond F. Edwin M. Wennerholt, 80, of Independence died at 1 30 p m Tuesday. No known relatives survive. Services set for 10 30 a m Thursday at Barta Hesser chapel conducted by Rev Jack Oliver of First Christian Church. Burial will be in Cedar Memorial. Friends may call at the funeral home.
Cedar Rapids Marion United Fund announced two new agency contracts bringing total agencies to 14 for this fall. Marion YMCA Youth Center and Home for Aged Women signed standard contracts, while Salvat ion Army YMCA and Ellis Community Center had not yet signed. The campaign budget totals 480 616 with 113 909 for new groups and 72711 for Red Cross leading participants.
Frank L. Aura M Turnipseed 66 of North Liberty and longtime custodian at Veterans Hospital Iowa City died Tuesday morning after a brief illness. Born Wellman April 11 1891 he belonged to the American Legion post in Iowa City. Survived by wife Lila Wilson Turnipseed married Ottumwa February 22 1923 and son Wendall of Swisher. Services at Brosh chapel at 4 pm.
AP reports James G. Patton of the National Farmers Union will meet with former President Truman next month to discuss a network television show sponsored by the farm group. The Denver Post cites Truman saying offers from all major networks are on hold and that Farmers Union sponsorship would be acceptable, though no sponsor has an inside track.
Gov. Herschel C. Loveless outlined a plan to expand technical and marketing research facilities at Iowa State College for Iowa industries. He proposed a joint industry college program creating an Iowa Foundation to finance and align resources with national needs. He aims to meet ISU officials soon to develop the plan and improve cooperation between industry and campus research.
Coe College announces eight scholarship recipients chosen by Henry Bucher. Recipients include Peter C. Anderson III for the Arthur Poe scholarship, Luanne Buscher of Anamosa, Max Fitz, Patricia Pardubsky and Virginia Bryan among others, with awards from multiple funds and memorials.
A federal district court session is set for Wednesday August 28 in Cedar Rapids. The docket includes two pre trial conferences in the government suit to recover property from convicted bank robber Ramon Remine and Frances M Freestone’s suit to compel Prudential Life Insurance to pay 13200 on a life policy. The Remine conference is at 10 am and Freestone at 1 pm.
