Cleanup set for Cedar Rapids coal gas site through 1934
MidAmerican, successor to the former Iowa-Illinois Gas and Electric, oversees cleanup of a Cedar Rapids coal gas site with coal tar residues. The north-edge site north of Eighth Avenue will host a federal building, while the south area becomes a parking lot and riverfront trail. The plant, built 1926 with a 15 story tank, exploded in 1946, halting gas supply until repairs. older tank held half its capacity. Tests will determine soil and groundwater impact and further remediation steps.
