Thousands of anti coup protesters surged into Moscow as tanks moved toward the Russian parliament. Boris Yeltsin urged a general strike while security forces faced civilians and the capital remained uncertain over who controlled the city.
University of Iowa researchers report that about 60 percent of 3 000 Soviets polled in Russia Ukraine and Lithuania from May to July prefer old regime security and order over democracy and capitalism. Lithuanians show strongest pro democracy support with 70 percent despite potential economic costs.
AT&T reports call volume to the Soviet Union spiked 100 fold after the coup, hindering connections. The company pursued satellite and cable routes and third party links to reach the USSR, but delays persisted.
