Job Service of Iowa reports a small drop in unemployment benefits to 27.8 million dollars in July from 28.4 million in June, with seasonal factors cited. Despite higher unemployment in June 5.8 percent, total employment rose with summer construction work, and year to date benefits total 211 million dollars.
Iowa gubernatorial hopeful Terry Branstad pledges that at least half of his state appointments would be women, arguing since women are over half the population. He notes Governor Ray has already appointed many women, while stopping short of promising a Supreme Court seat for a woman.
Iowa Social Services Department plans for a possible 5 percent budget cut if federal aid falls. Commissioner Michael Reagen orders contingency budgets while noting cuts depend on national budget actions. Half of funds are federal. Iowa could face about 20 million dollars loss starting October 1.
The Iowa Federation of Labor president says layoffs and plant closings reduced federation membership by 6,000 to 59,000. Iowa officials told lawmakers they did all they could to prevent weak steel in the Sioux City bridge. Director Warren Dunham said tougher steel will be required for future projects after a 31 inch crack closed the $9.5 million span. Repair costs are estimated at $3 to $4 million as state and supplier dispute payment and warranty terms loom.
