Dixie Town Seethes as Boycott Paralyzes Edwards
In Edwards Mississippi a white business climate shrinks under a Negro led boycott tied to an 18 point civil rights demand list. Stores sit empty and streets empty as both sides stand firm. Mayor Robbins cites limited city power while boycott leaders deem the effort essential. The town of 1500, 60 percent Black, faces economic strangulation with no violence reported. Independent outsiders are blamed by Robbins though tensions mount as the Freedom Democrats organized the push. The piece notes the town’s rural setting 25 miles west of Jackson and the absence of new shops or white cafes.
