Elkader area voters defeated two school bond issues totaling 330000 by a small margin. A 300000 bond for a school addition fell 0.6 percent short of 60 percent. A 30000 bus garage bond received 59 percent, 1 percent short. Total 442 yes 302 no for the addition, 432 yes 299 no for the bus garage. Precincts show mixed results across Elkader St Olaf Elkport and Littleport.

Blaze Destroys Gudenkauf Barn Near Hopkinton
A large barn on the Joe Gudenkauf farm five miles northeast of Hopkinton was destroyed by a Friday night fire. The 37 by 72 foot structure held hay, straw, machinery and milking equipment with an estimated loss of 20000 dollars. Fire crews from Hopkinton Manchester Worthington Cascade and Delhi fought the blaze, saving the house as onlookers jammed surrounding roads.

Mysterious Death of Iowa Doctor in Dayton
Webster County Coroner said the cause of death for 41 year old Dr Harold W Burleson will be determined after lab tests. He was found dead in his Dayton clinic by his wife and nurse with no autopsy finding. Tests are being conducted in Minneapolis. Burleson had moved from Fort Dodge to start a Dayton clinic and is survived by his wife two children and three brothers Warter Des Moines Gerald Fort Dodge and Dr Ferris Fresno Calif.

MT PLEASANT UP Charles Simmons 21 Bellefontaine Ohio and Jim Patterson 23 Lakeview Ohio held on robbery with aggravation charges. Both arraigned before Justice of the Peace George Means and referred to Henry county grand jury after a Friday morning holdup at a filling station where 65 dollars were taken. Smith Mental Test Results Due Monday
DES MOINES UP Dr Charles C Graves director of mental institutions for the state board of control said Saturday results of a mental test given James B Smith 23 will be revealed Monday. Smith was given a two hour examination here Friday and then returned to Knoxville where he is being held on a charge he murdered his grandmother Mrs Joe Betterton 67 last weekend. Graves said he will report on the examination to Marion County Attorney Bert Bandstra. Bandstra said another mental examination will be given Smith Aug 31. The former soldier and mental patient admitted striking his grandmother with a shovel at her Attica home.

La Porte City Man Charged With Libel and Burglary
Uri Rich ard Elliott, 57, of La Porte City, posted a 4000 dollar bond on charges including breaking and entering and criminal libel in alleged efforts to smear a former prison inmate. Police say he stole a typewriter from Waterloo Dredging Company, left a card with the other man’s name, and sent a letter to the plant claiming plant workers disliked a jailbird working beside them.

Alleged Army Deserter Jailed in Iowa City
Ed Commander 27 a Des Moines man under an alias Ed Clark was arrested at Westlawn nurses dormitory Iowa City on a federal warrant for desertion from the army since last March. He reportedly left his 10-year-old son Robert with his sister a nursing student to seek work. Commander offered no resistance and was held for army authorities while the boy was sent to his grandmother in Des Moines.

3 Vehicles Figure In Crash on 150
Three vehicles were involved in a crash about nine miles north of Cedar Rapids on highway 150. Kenneth A. McMillan 49 of Walker was treated for a deep cut. Mrs. Warren C. Tucker 47 of Evansdale was treated for a bruised hand. The crash occurred as McMillan attempted to pass a car driven by Harold Peacock of Center Point, then struck a southbound gravel truck driven by Gene A. Kelley before colliding with Tucker’s car which ended up in a ditch.
