Farm Export Sales Expected To Level Off in Coming Year
The Agriculture Department projects farm export sales will level at about $22 billion in fiscal 1977, roughly equal to the 1976 total of $22.247 billion, with imports rising about 16 percent to $11.7 billion. The agricultural trade surplus would dip to around $10 billion, the smallest since 1973, as demand shifts and prices change. 1977 outlook also notes declines in wheat, feed grains, and soy shipments but higher values in oilseeds, meat, and cotton. Major buyers include Soviet Union, Western Europe, and Japan, while China remains below $50 million. Weather hampered the 1976 grain harvest, but progress continued into August.
