Chicago hog prices hit new all time highs twice on Thursday with an early $31.75 per cwt, then $31.85 for a Hamp shire load of 46 hogs averaging 215 pounds. The sale to an Eastern buyer totaled about $2,700 as the market opened higher on lighter receipts.
Choice hogs sold at 32.50 per hundred pounds in Sioux City, the highest price at a major market. About 6,000 hogs on sale, 1,500 head delivered to packing plants. Trade slowed late. gains faded for animals over 250 pounds while cattle in Chicago ranged weak to steady.
A spokesman for the nations butchers predicted retail meat prices will rise again in the next week to 10 days despite ongoing strikes by housewives. George Dressler cited all time high livestock prices and said packers wholesalers and butchers cannot absorb the increases. Steers reached a record 41.35 per hundredweight in Chicago with a note on a 41.65 figure in Sioux City. Washington officials warned milk prices would climb further over the next four months despite possible relief after year’s start.

A man reportedly determined to end his life resisted rescue efforts and was killed when a fast freight train struck him at a San Mateo crossing. George McLeod told police he tried to pry the man free but failed. The deceased was tentatively identified as 59 year old Peter Zannon, seen at the crossing on prior evenings.
Estimated 25 000 crowd on Wednesday marks largest attendance in Hawkeye Downs history. Four day total nears 82 089 as Sunday opened with 23 000. Pageant events include White Horse troupe, All-Iowa revue drawing nearly 10 000 and planned crownings and fireworks.
Davenport gelding Big Red won the feature race adding purse money at Hawkeye Downs as horse racing returns to town. Jockey Tommy Nolan steered the Harry Nolan entry two lengths ahead of Aunt Pet owned by L. L. Sackett of Delhi. The two day meet carries $1,500 in total purses with a $500 Hawkeye Derby prize and a top Iowa horse trophy. Crowd estimated at 3,000 witnessed three and a half hours of entertainment including the White Horse troupe and a helicopter return exhibition.
The Friday program features pro races resuming at 1 30 p m before the grandstand continuing last Sunday’s track record event. Also on Friday the 4 H Boys club achievement show opens and the Light Horse show is set for 7 30 p m. Saturday brings Kids day with rides nine cents to 5 p m and free balloons plus final shows by the White Horse troupe at 7 15 p m and the All Iowa fair revue at 8 p m.

Corporal K owned by Mrs. H S Kennedy Ottumwa and Empre Shara from Elm hill stables Mt Sterling IL finished first and second in the five furlong event. A crowded photo finish saw Dixie Dare and Perfect Lady tied for third and fourth as six horses crossed the wire.

American foot troops completed an all night defensive exercise in the Grunewald forest west of Berlin. Hamburg reports said Soviet troops are completing summer maneuvers near the zonal frontiers.
