George Bush secured the Republican presidential nomination after an hour long roll call at the convention in New Orleans with Dan Quayle as running mate. Texas Senator Phil Gramm formally nominated Bush as the crowd cheered and balloons were released inside the Superdome.
Three days of 100 degree heat devastates corn and soybean crops in Iowa. ISU Extension agronomists estimate soybeans down 6 to 7 percent and corn down 12 to 13 percent, with projected soybean output near 219.8 million bushels, 15.7 million below USDA's prior August forecast.
President Mohammed Zia ul-Haq of Pakistan and U S Ambassador Arnold Raphel were killed when their C 130 aircraft exploded after takeoff from a remote airport. Also killed were Brig Gen Herbert Wassam and several Pakistani generals. Concerns of sabotage circulated amid vague reports of anti aircraft missiles or shoot down.
Officials say bruised ego led to a fatal shooting after Evan Paul and Don Tex Cope Jr fought in a Vickers service station lot. Cope died from the shooting as Linn County considers charges ranging from second degree murder to voluntary manslaughter. Police note witness statements may favor Paul, with a decision due today.
The Iowa Supreme Court ruled that Bremer County hosts who provide liquor to underage guests can be liable for accidents.
