Master Conservationist program grows in Black Hawk County
In Cedar Falls the eight week Hartman Reserve course trains adults in ecology and environmental stewardship. Mike Tompkins, a Dysart teacher, will earn master conservationist certification after 32 class hours and 32 volunteer hours benefiting Dysart Tree Board, Kittrell project, and Neal Smith Refuge.

Judge sets murder trial date for homeless man
A Polk County judge set a November 26 trial date for Bobby Bailey 38 charged with first degree murder in the beating of 82 year old Alfred Comito with a hammer December 21 2000. Bailey was found mentally competent after state officials had him evaluated at Oakdale.

Woolly mammoth bones unearthed at Des Moines parking site
Workmen digging a parking garage in downtown Des Moines uncovered 12 to 15 bones believed to be a juvenile woolly mammoth. The bones, 8,000 to 10,000 years old and preserved in water, may allow study by researchers from the state historic preservation office. No human remains or federal funds involved.
