Farmers urged to hold grain on farm to back storage program

The National Farmers Organizations push for farmers to store half their grain and soybeans on farms supports Secretary of Agriculture Orville Freeman's plan for orderly marketing. Participants in the 1967 feed grain program get non recourse loans around 1.05 per bushel plus 0.30 per bushel direct payments. Non participant farmers can obtain bank loans on stored corn but they are recourse. Voices urge higher loan levels but raising them could deter program participation and raise export subsidy needs. NFC notes storage on farms is sound if marketing remains orderly amid a large crop and shrinking exports, with limited success in livestock and perishables.
