Rancher Beats Savage Bear to Save Cubs in Wyoming
Bernie Cole, 65, a ranch worker near Jackson, Wyoming, fought off a 700 pound mother bear after she attacked him while he cleaned a beaver dam. He struck the bear with a five foot aspen club, killing it after a vicious 15 foot tumble, then rode 10 miles to a powwow station for aid. The bear’s motive was believed to protect her cubs. Cole suffered multiple cuts and a head wound but was not seriously hurt and was later discharged from the hospital.
