Cedar Rapids Linn County voters will decide in November whether to expand the Board of Supervisors from three to five members. Republican candidate Dave Machacek plans to present petition signatures at Tuesday’s meeting to compel the board to place the size question on the ballot.
A five member board proposal would trigger a November 2008 election to add two members. Supervisors would serve four year terms with voters on the November 7 ballot. State law required Machacek and supporters to gather at least 11 074 signatures equal to ten percent of 2004 presidential voters to place the issue on the ballot.
The International Astronomical Union voted to add three new planets, expanding the solar system beyond the nine previously listed. Pluto remains in a new category of plutons along with Charon and Xena UB313 awaiting formal naming.
Iowa seniors in 2006 averaged a 22.1 ACT composite, above the national average for fifth straight year and behind Minnesota and Wisconsin. State ranks third among states with at least half the class taking the test, while the nationwide average rose to 21.1 from 20.9, the largest jump in 20 years.
The EPA plans tighter standards that could require catalytic converters on lawn mower engines as emissions from mowers draw greater scrutiny. EPA spokesman John Millett notes one hour of mower use equals twenty cars’ emissions, with engines now larger than decades ago.
