Hit the road Ol' Red heads to California

Ol' Red the 1974 Oldsmobile 98 with 222000 miles begins a 3900 mile California round trip at 6 a.m. Friday to raise funds for the Linn County American Cancer Society. About 2300 dollars has been raised via mile-guess tickets and a drawing will award 10 percent of proceeds if the car completes the trip.

Public art comes to the park at Pleasant Creek Recreation Area

A 40 foot long sculpture titled Cedar Rapids Colonnade Returning Hosts, by David Dahlquist of Des Moines, will be dedicated at 1 p.m. Saturday at Pleasant Creek near Palo. Part of the Art in State Buildings program, the commission cost 9000 dollars with 4400 more for concrete and base work.

No explosion of gasoline thefts despite higher price

The Gazette reports no surge in drive away gas thefts despite higher fuel costs. Nordstrom Oil Co. owner Dave Nordstrom notes cameras and trained staff at HandiMarts to deter thieves. Telecomx USA subsidiaries bought from MCI by insiders

Telecomx USA Publishing and Telecom USA Telecommunications Systems Co. agreed to buy their firms from MCI Communications Corp. The deals, announced after a TelecomxUSA MCI merger, will privatize the units later this year with the Publishing firm retaining 250 employees and the Systems unit about 70. Arthur L. Christofferson will chair both companies, leading the Publishing firm as CEO and the Systems unit as CEO, with day to day duties limited in the latter.
