The Iowa Highway Patrol conducted its largest simultaneous traffic check, issuing tickets to 1,353 motorists in 16 counties across 13 districts. Nearly 200 patrolmen participated, with two AWOL servicemen and a stolen car found during the operation.
The State Safety Department said Patrol district 11 covering Benton Linn and Johnson counties issued 41 summonses 33 warnings and 29 faulty equipment tickets. Patrol Sgt James Gildroy told The Gazette that no extra patrolmen were on duty beyond the regular assignments in the Cedar Rapids region.
Statewide drive led by State Safety Commissioner Russell Brown patrolled 16 counties with focus on highways and secondary roads. Patrols issued 272 summonses and 952 faulty equipment tickets, plus 129 warnings. Two drunk driving charges were filed and Osceola county recovered a stolen car. District tallies show varied counts of summonses, warnings, and faulty equipment across counties.
Cedar Rapids notes the 23rd annual All-Iowa fair reached near 100000 in total attendance. A Friday crowd of 17862 at Hawkeye Downs pushed five day totals to 83366.
Sunday program lists 11:30 a.m. Gladiolus Show judging and 1:00 p.m. auto race time trials. 1:30 p.m. concert by Anamosa band. 2:00 p.m. one hundred mile late model stock car race. 7:30 p.m. concert by Anamosa. 8:00 p.m. finale of International Spectacular of 1958.
Friday's attendance beat 1957 by 1200 and marks the second straight day 1958 crowds exceed 1957. If Saturday matches last year, 1958 will top 100000. Four judging rings handled livestock entries while grand champions parade Saturday night before the International Spectacular.
Philadelphia AP Dr Chevalier Jackson aged 92 founder of Temple University bronchoscopic clinic died at Temple University hospital. He developed the bronchoscope and spent 22 years learning to remove an open safety pin from children’s throats while treating patients from around the world.
President Eisenhower teed off at Gettysburg Country Club in a chipper mood with his son John, a major, and three friends. The group completed 18 holes in about two and a half hours in 73 degree sunshine before returning to the farm.
Linn County Medical Society hosts a Child Health forum Tuesday at 8 p.m. in Coe auditorium. Parents of pre school and grade school children are invited without charge to hear physicians answer audience written questions, including how often tetanus booster shots should be given.
Gov. Herschel C. Loveless holds a near two to one edge over Republican rival Dr. William G. Murray after Friday voting at The Gazette All-Iowa fair booth. Of 1,017 votes cast, Loveless 673 Murray 328 with 16 spoiled. Total five day fair votes 3,082 with 114 spoiled ballots.
In Galway Ireland authorities report strong evidence that the KLM airliner Hugo de Groot exploded in flight, killing all 99 aboard before it plunged into the sea off Galway Bay. Post mortems show victims died prior to impact as wreckage and personal items wash ashore.
A U S court martial sentenced Army S/Sgt Charles S. West of Washington to six months confinement for going AWOL in Taipei. West, 41, stayed after leaving for the United States on June 16 and was found July 15 in a Taipei food stall. He cited enjoying Formosa scenery and cheap pleasures, including a Chinese bar girl known as Dingo.
Space watchers report Sputnik III will reappear over Iowa with two passes tonight at about 8:20 to 8:25 p.m. and 10:01 to 10:06 p.m. Dr Percy Carr from Iowa State College notes the rocket remains bright yet dimmer on the second pass as it nears earth shadow.
Air Force sergeant S Sgt Oscar Powell of Freeport New York crawled from a cockpit flap to fix a jammed nose wheel on a C 119 aircraft hovering 2000 feet above Mitchell Field Nassau County Long Island. Powell held on with hands and feet while securing the wheel amid possible sudden retraction. Powell, an eight year air force veteran, helped ensure a safe landing.
The Air Force delays public comment on the Thor Vanguard moon mission as officials at Cape Canaveral prepare a three stage rocket. The launch window spans four August days with tentative targets around 9 a.m. CST. If successful the probe would reach space in about 2.6 days carrying instruments to study lunar lighting, shadows and magnetic fields.
Washington AP reports Barbara Bates Gunderson, Dakotas Republican national committeewoman, confirmed to a $20,000 a year Civil Service commissioner role by the Senate.
The Senate rejected a 10 percent increase in social security benefits by a 53 to 32 vote, after claims the higher boost would trigger a presidential veto. Sen. Yarborough insisted the larger rise could be funded. Kerr challenged the premise and favored the 7 percent raise.
The Senate backed down on demands for a compromise and moved to consider and likely pass the House approved farm bill next week. By voice vote it accepted the agriculture committee recommendation to seek return of the House bill, reversing Friday’s push for a House-Senate compromise. Ellender said the move allows the bill to go to the President after Senate approval.
San Juan Puerto Rico AP reports hurricane Cleo turned northward and does not threaten the U S mainland Bahamas or any Caribbean island. At 11 a.m. EST Cleo was about 1 000 miles southeast of Bermuda with winds near 125 mph and hurricane force winds extending 75 miles, gales reaching 225 miles north and 150 miles south.
In Independence Missouri Glen Bright was dismantling a metal washing machine in his yard as a thunderstorm neared when a lightning bolt hit a coil of copper wire near his feet. He was dazed but unharmed.
Homer Cabe of Gastonia bought a used car for 30 dollars. When he tried to obtain an auto license, he learned insurance would cost 34 dollars and the six month license fee applied. Cabe called the situation unfair and costly.
A divorce suit was filed Friday against H Maxwell Goldfine son of a Boston industrialist cited for contempt of Congress. Claire C Goldfine seeks temporary and permanent alimony, claiming she cannot support herself or pay an attorney and cites extreme cruelty.
In Washington AP report, Comptroller General Joseph Campbell blasts the Army for doling out too much money to soldiers and dependents. He cites 24 million dollars in overpayments over the last two years.
A Northeast Airline Convair from New York crashed in fog near Nantucket airport killing 23 passengers and crew. Notable victims include Gordon Dean former AEC chairman and Harvey Schwamm, with Jacqueline Young of Nantucket among the dead and a 2 year old survivor.
