Butter values rise on storage report and import plans
New York City market closes Friday with butter at 36 cents as the Aug. 1 storage report shows holdings well below the ten year level. Compared with last year the shortage runs to 26,235,000 pounds and 23,543,000 pounds below the five year average. Imports last week include 1600 casks from Holland and 950 from northern Europe. EU plans to aid dairy producers may lead to countervailing duties, though that could shift prices rather than reduce imports. Milk output and cow numbers dip, pastures remain poor, with consumption expected to rise after Labor Day.
