Stranded Peruvian Desert Rescue Of Cedar Rapids Man
Robert Johnson, 23, formerly of Cedar Rapids and now on the staff of the American embassy at Lima, Peru, used a stick of chewing gum to seal a radiator leak after getting lost in a desert while on a three hour trip with companions. They later followed railroad tracks to find their way and arrived after three times the expected time. Johnson has long ties to Cedar Rapids and returns there on leave, having first visited Peru in 1921 with a father who helped popularize basketball. He plans to resume duties in New York aboard the Cymbat on Sept 18.
