Ovel Wins in Ohio in Central SCCA Super Vee Race
Nelson Ledges Ohio saw Scott Ovel of Cedar Rapids take the lead on the next to last lap to win the Formula Super Vee race in the SCCA Central division. Ovel holds the division lead with one win from a perfect score and averaged 108.07 mph over the two mile course. Mike Plotz finished fourth.

Walford falls to Quad Cities in AABC tourney loss

Marion swimmers set Iowa records at Region 7 AAU meet
Marion athletes Thomas and Gilbertson each broke Iowa marks at Milwaukee Region 7 AAU championships. Thomas won the 10-under 100-meter breaststroke in 1 29.17 and placed in other events. Gilbertson won the 13-14 200-meter breaststroke in a state record time while adding medley and freestyle placements. Lanny Wadkins, a seven-year pro seen as both hero and villain, won the 59th PGA National Championship at Pebble Beach after a dramatic playoff with Gene Littler.
