Citywide repair and repainting surge noted after Curtis survey. Reports show $112,785 in remodeling in six months and widespread white paint use spreading from town to rural areas. Builders, merchants cite booming demand for paint in residences and barns alike.
The Cedar Rapids Local No. 447 reports only seven of 135 union members idle, a strong showing despite hot days. Exterior painting dominates, with white and Verdes green leading trims. interior decorating expected in autumn aided by PWA public buildings. A deal closed by P. C. Buckman transfers ownership of the Checkerboard cafe to Mrs. G. H. Wilke and her daughter Phyllis Patterson. Possession is to be given Sept. 1. Buckman, currently involved with his ailing father's hardware business in Adel, will devote his time to his wife’s new venture.
Ralph Possehl has leased the East Side service station and will operate it here, while the present owner provides the Adel business. The lease implies a return to Elkader later for the operator.
