Allende orders military to break truckers strike in Chile

President Salvador Allende ordered the military to end a 10 year old transport strike after truckers rejected an ultimatum. The 56,000 truckers' walkout has caused shortages of bread and gasoline as taxi and bus workers joined in. The Christian Democratic opposition backed the strike and warned government action could trigger violence. Police used water cannons against protesting truckers' wives outside the presidential palace.
