Money Costs for Iowa Campaigns Says Governing Hopeful

Ames economist William G. Murray recounts spending about 24 000 of his own money in two failed gubernatorial bids in 1958 and 1966. He left ISU at times for campaigns and faced an income loss while financing ads, staff, and supplies through a separate campaign finance group. The law limits candidate spending to the governor’s salary, but most campaigns use independent finance committees to manage funds. Murray says he had to dip into savings and borrow to cover campaign expenses.
