Freese submitted the low bid of 8 797 500 on the north side of Highway 30 from J Street SW to 1 675 feet west, for a sanitary sewer installation. Hennessey Brothers Construction Co. bid 58 085 for the east Bowling Street SE and west Bowling area projects, $2 870 over the 55 215 estimate.
Dozens of young men from Eastern Iowa join Navy programs at San Diego and Great Lakes for nuclear field engineering and aviation training. Jerry Cox of Independence and George Riordan of Sigourney, both 18, head to San Diego. Ronald Jackson also sails to San Diego in aviation. Others train at San Diego and Great Lakes, including John Carpenter of Central City, George Alderdyce of Delta, Donald Reittinger of Dyersville, Gary Carolan of Decorah, Dennis Clinton of Elkader, and Ronald Gilson of Waukon. Private Kenneth Hunt, married with wife at 270h First Avenue SE, returns on leave from Fort Leonard Wood toward Fort Devens for communications security clerk training. Hunt is a Perry native who grew up in Cedar Rapids.
In Lusaka Northern Rhodesia Premier Kenneth Kaunda announced that Prophetess Alice Lenshina has surrendered after weeks of Lumpa sect turmoil. Government says 491 Africans killed and 24 wounded while unofficial reports claim up to 1,000 dead as crackdown continues in the eastern region 400 miles from Lusaka. Lenshina 45, leader of Lumpa, proclaimed herself prophetess and founded a sect with 100,000 followers before the surrender.
Two bids on sewer project contracts were accepted by the city council on Wednesday. Milan W Freese Construction was among the firms awarded the bridge related work, with one bid previously reserved last week.
A war correspondent describes fast moving helicopters and rockets in a Vietnamese jungle patrol. Troop carriers unload quickly as Viet Cong anti aircraft fire bites. An American paratroop adviser warns of hidden enemy numbers while Estes dives and blasts a jungle area. Ground troops discover a blown bridge and say the operation will continue for days.
President Johnson asserts no national police force is needed but pledges federal aid to enforce laws when local authorities fail. He warns violence blocks racial justice, praises the civil rights law, and calls for orderly progress and exact enforcement across Mississippi, New York, and beyond.
Schmidt Construction Co. of Winfield and Oliphant Engineering Co. of Toddville won the bids for rebuilding the C street SW and J street SW bridges. Schmidt bid 106,465.18 for C street, Green Engineering estimated 105,000. Oliphant bid 114,620.64 for J street. The J street bridge will stay open during the All Iowa Fair, Aug 16-23. Bids were submitted last week after a one week delay.
Two 16 year old Cedar Rapids boys who earlier confessed to a break-in at Rapids Chevrolet Co admitted a second burglary. Juvenile officers said they stole about 6 dollars in the Chevy break-in and also admitted stealing cash and other items from Mitler's Motor Sales Inc last week. They were caught early Monday trying to break into the A Avenue tavern.
U S marshals seized a liquid disinfectant deodorant labeled Midland D D Disinfectant Deodorant in Dubuque under a North Iowa federal condemnation action. The label claimed germ activity not supported, with 2044 containers weighing 15 ounces. A second warrant found no material bearing the label and suggested a label change. An involuntary bankruptcy case against R L McComas is pending in Cedar Rapids, with petitioners Lile Ackley Central Cooperative Turkey Producers and Citizens State Bank Iowa Falls alleging fraudulent assignment. William Woodward of Dubuque admitted to practice in North Iowa federal court.
Eight Palo youths faced charges in two break-ins with two teens, Irons and Ivie, each sentenced to ten years in the Anamosa men’s reformatory with probation after guilty pleas. Clarke Bradley also received ten years and probation. Judge B J Maxwell presided. Other cases include dismissals involving Mary J Baird and Leo E Baird, plus a cemetery paving appeal against Cedar Rapids.
