Senator Jesse Helms led a conservative bloc urging the Republican Party to adopt strict pro life and anti busing planks for the platform. He warned the party will wither unless it pivots to core conservative ideals supported by Reagan allies and other GOP members.
Labor Secretary W. J. Usery convened union and management negotiators at his office after ending a marathon bargaining session that focused on his settlement plan. Hopes for a breakthrough rose as the talks extended into the night but ended without comment from those involved.
Secretary of State Henry Kissinger pressed for an early round table conference to resolve Lebanon's civil war and said the United States might attend if invited. A separate Lebanon piece appears on page 4B.
The senate seeks to extend a program that provides over 250 000 jobs for the unemployed through September 1977. Details appear on page 5A.
The cost of flying within the United States will rise 2 percent starting September 15. Details appear on page 11A. Tonight may see rain with a low in the upper 60s, and Thursday will be partly cloudy with highs in the upper 80s. Rain chances are 50 percent tonight and 30 percent on Thursday.
The House approved a broad energy bill 293 to 88 sending to President Ford. It would raise gasoline prices by up to half a cent per gallon and restore the Federal Energy Administration for 17 more months. The measure also expands loan guarantees up to $2 billion for energy saving projects and provides grants totaling $200 million for weatherization and insulation for low income homes. It extends FEA programs through 1977 and exempts low yield stripper wells from price controls, allowing prices to align with world levels.
Congress approved a swine flu insurance program to back vaccine makers and cover legal costs for providers. Health officials say inoculations start next month with the elderly and chronically ill first, then nationwide by mid October.
Don Novak, jailed in Linn County on false pretenses and motor vehicle larceny charges, says Sheriff Walter Grant helped obtain a court order allowing Novak in the delivery room for his newborn son named Coley Grant Novak. Novak, 24, Cedar Rapids, credits the favor to Grant.
FBI Director Clarence Kelley said he cannot categorically deny that agents burgle or commit other crimes. He noted fear of disciplinary or criminal action among bureau staff and indicated investigations may or may not lead to charges. He also said the FBI will not investigate the Roselli murder and cannot control state-level crimes.
The Cedar Rapids area report by the Cedar Rapids Marion Area Chamber of Commerce shows a median household income of 15 178 for Cedar Rapids and 15 063 for Linn County with growth of about 10 percent from the prior year. Retail sales in 1975 totaled about 567.2 million for the metro area and 486 million in Cedar Rapids.
Debby Rosdall, an 18 year old blind student from Fairfax, contesting Grant Wood area education agency's rule barring her leader dog at Prairie high school. She planned a meeting with Myron Rodee and Jim Miller to examine the policy and her right to bring the dog to classes.
