Ground Combat Role Ends for U S Troops

The last U S combat infantrymen in Vietnam prepare to go home as the 3rd Battalion, 21st Infantry is phased out. At peak strength 112 maneuver battalions supported a 543,000-man force. by Sept 1 forces will drop to 39,000 in country plus 100,000 air, navy and marine personnel overseas. Sergeant Ronald Wegerle recalls exhausting patrols and a desire to return home as the final combat units depart. One wounded on patrol and the last combat infantryman, Spec. 4 James McVicar, to be flown home Saturday.

Air Force NCO Sentenced 3 Years for Spying

May End Internment In Northern Ireland

Belfast sources say Northern Ireland Secretary William Whitelaw may abolish internment without trial after a meeting with Roman Catholic leaders. The talks follow rioting and a Belfast bombing that killed a girl and two accomplices, with troops later dispersing crowds at Unity Flats.

GAB Authorizes Air Fare Hikes

The Civil Aeronautics Board approved a 2.7 percent allowable rise in domestic air fares. The increase is optional and airlines may raise fares up to 2.7 percent if justified by costs. Competition may limit actions as rivals may offer cheaper transport to retain customers.

Senate Bans Airport Passenger Head Taxes

The Senate voted 83 to 2 to outlaw airline passenger head taxes and aid local airports. Cedar Rapids and other cities consider such taxes to fund airport improvements. If enacted, passengers could not be charged an at airport fee. federal airport construction aid would rise from 840 million to 1.6 billion over five years. New Hampshire and Sarasota-Bradenton were exempt from the ban.

Fischer Wins 13th Chess Game in Reykjavik

AP reports Fischer extended his World Championship lead over Boris Spassky by winning the adjourned 13th game after Spassky blundered on the 41st move. The loss left Spassky facing an 8-5 deficit with up to 11 games remaining, while Fischer closed in on the title.
