Ground Combat Role Ends for U S Troops
The last U S combat infantrymen in Vietnam prepare to go home as the 3rd Battalion, 21st Infantry is phased out. At peak strength 112 maneuver battalions supported a 543,000-man force. by Sept 1 forces will drop to 39,000 in country plus 100,000 air, navy and marine personnel overseas. Sergeant Ronald Wegerle recalls exhausting patrols and a desire to return home as the final combat units depart.
