Pollution measures expand as inland towns upgrade plants
Iowa officials say inland river towns lack adequate sewage plants as growth strains systems. Of 446 municipalities with sewers, 298 have plants. Keokuk Fort Madison and Muscatine are building. Larger cities on inland streams generally have plants but need upgrades to handle rising loads. Houser notes some towns without plants lie on unused streams and that the anti pollution law allows action when discharges harm water use. July rainfall topped records in parts of the state, with overall wet conditions, while detergents are not a major Iowa river problem.
