Airlines adopt strict hijack precautions amid rising fears after in flight abductions. The Dallas Times Herald reports top executives pushing safety rules for pilots compartments barred doors armed crews optional measures including bar devices and concealed offensive tools.
Secretary of State Rusk said major Western Powers expect negotiations with Russia on Berlin but have no timetable. He reported close allied unity after week of European consultations with President Kennedy and noted no firm gap between Paris and Washington on timing. Llewellyn Thompson accompanied him back from Moscow and will return to Europe after brief consultations.
A helicopter carrying four Americans is missing on a supply mission to tribal rebel territory. The craft, owned by Air America Co and operating under charter to the pro Western government in Vientiane, carried the pilot, a crew chief and two U S military advisers.
President Kennedy signed a law cutting the duty free limit for foreign goods by American tourists to 100 dollars per person, down from 500. The reduction takes effect in 30 days and remains in effect until July 1, 1963.
In a Kremlin speech Khrushchev urges negotiations over Berlin saying it is a fairy tale the West will fight to defend West Berlin. He warns that if war occurs hundreds of millions could die and calls Western figures' casualty claims imperialist propaganda.
Cedar Rapids born Forrest C. Holveck a Cedar Rapids deputy in the county assessor 9 years was named Linn county assessor. He will take the post Sept 1 after a 34 hour board meeting and will serve a 6 year term at first with pay set at 600 a month for the remaining four months of this year.
Soviet cosmonaut Gherman Titov, 26, told reporters he ejected from Vostok II at mission end and parachuted down. He noted two landing options exist and he could have landed the craft himself if needed. Titov reported no ill effects from acceleration or weightlessness and said meals after landing were uneventful.
An Illinois family of five headed for a new life and business in Canada died when their car crossed the center line and struck a pickup before hitting a tree in Sturgis Michigan. Frank Vercoe 56 his wife 36 their daughter 5 son 3 and mother in law Ruby Page 72 were killed. The truck driver Frank Butten 43 not injured. Vercoe may have suffered a heart attack and brakes were not applied. The family had planned to operate a business in Canada and had been selling their Chicago suburban home. Vercoe worked for a Chicago lumber firm.
The Associated Press notes widespread rain in Iowa with over an inch in many areas. Clinton led totals at 1.62 inches as thundershowers lingered into Friday. Cooler air is forecast statewide with highs in the upper 70s to low 80s and a continuing cooling trend into Saturday.
