A barn at Jerry Axmears residence on the Malcolm farm burned Thursday. Fire officials have not determined the cause. The blaze destroyed 43 bales of hay. Grinnell and Brooklyn fire departments assisted. Malcolm lies about 45 miles west of Iowa City.
Democratic challenger Ann Hutchinson narrows the gap with House Budget Chairman Jim Nussle in a Davenport district poll. Nussle leads 49 percent to Hutchinson's unclear total among 500 likely voters, with supporters noting known figures and redistricting adding three counties.
Summer Buddies teachers at the district run a prekindergarten program to assess literacy and math readiness. The $100,000 Goals 2000 grant from the Iowa Department of Education funded last year and this year’s program and other literacy efforts, but the grant has now run out. Brant says continuation depends on securing new funding.
Corey Wessels, 22, of Buffalo Center, an employee of Denny Wessels Transport Inc., was charged with failing to stop at a railroad crossing while transporting hazardous materials. The Aug. 1 incident in Clear Lake involved a tanker with 7,500 gallons of diesel fuel and a collision with a freight train. The charge carries a $100 fine under state law.
The Linn County Medical Examiner says 53 year old Marsha Tuttle died of an intentional drug overdose. She was found in the back seat of her car in the Wal-Mart Supercenter lot after a passer-by reported the body. Tuttle lived in Cedar Rapids and worked at Mercy Medical Center.
