President Reagan said the United States will be as helpful as possible toward peace in Central America but did not endorse the regional plan signed by five leaders. He urged the plan to reflect Nicaraguan resistance interests while noting work remains to be done.
Anamosa inmates at the Iowa Men's Reformatory power a $6 million annual operation with 15 divisions. IPI employs about 280 inmates across four prisons producing license plates, custom furniture, tires, printed goods, dry cleaning and more. Sales top $6.1 million with some years posting losses offset by the revolving fund and staff cuts.
Three Kuwaiti flagged tankers escorted by four U S warships sailed in single file through the Strait of Hormuz and into the Persian Gulf. The convoy, part of Reagan’s plan to reflag 11 tankers for U S protection, included the Sea Isle City and Bridge ton with an Iranian frigate observed at a distance.
A strong earthquake struck northern Chile on Saturday, killing at least six people and injuring 106 as landslides blocked the Panamerican Highway. Residents fled Arica as buildings fell and utilities failed. tremor felt from Arica to Tacna and Arequipa. Reports varied with readings of 6.6 to 6.8 on the Richter scale.
Ray and Belinda Smalley found a 12 foot python trapped by a hay mower on their Huxley farm. Smalley shot the angry snake after retreating to get a rifle. Belinda, an animal caretaker at Iowa State University, noted the owner had kept exotics and that the snake had recently escaped.
