The narrative follows Jim and Jane through a week of cabin visits, farm tasks, fishing and boating along a lake, with beavers, haying, corn, cucumber harvests, and community notices. Neighbors visit, mail arrives, and plans shift toward easier living as August nears.
The agriculture department invites representatives of major lamb and mutton groups to a Kansas City meeting on August 25. Officials will discuss revising standards to better serve the industry while continuing federal grading. A July 23 proposal aims to promptly revise lamb and mutton standards to fix deficiencies.
Nyle Carr of Postville named manager of the Garrison Traer Co-op Dairy to assume duties later this month. He succeeds Wendell Crawford of Traer who resigned in July after leading since 1945. Carr, a nine year Postville Creamery employee, has been assistant manager recently and will move with his family to Garrison.
A new live stock sales barn is nearing completion on a 10 acre tract just east of Walker. Owners are Charles Bukek Stewart Aldrich and Donovan Oliphant.
Rex Conn reports on international protests over U S farm surplus disposal. Australian and New Zealand officials urge end to price supports, while FAO discussions stress complex surplus use and need for coordinated, development oriented policies.
Mrs. Mubarak Hassan of East Pakistan toured Cedar Rapids explaining food habits limit use of surplus U S wheat in development programs. She noted East Pakistan relies on rice and fish with scarce milk, high birth and infant mortality, and refrigeration challenges. She warned aid gifts may be wasted if dietary norms are ignored.
Four H baby beeves sold for an average of 27.70 per cwt at the Delaware county fair closing in Manchester. Market hogs averaged 14.59 and market lambs 21.74. The sale totaled over 20 000 dollars. Attendance at the fair rose 35 percent with a large closing grandstand audience and 1000 season tickets sold in advance.
Independence Iowa 120 head of 4-H baby beeves sold at the Buchanan county fair auction averaging 27.48 per cwt. The top price 34.25 per cwt went to James Michels for his grand champion beef, bought by Oscar Mayer Packing Co. The reserve champion owned by Glen Peck sold for 31.25 per cwt to Fairchild Packing Co. Hog top at 17 per cwt bought by Oscar Mayer. Michels named champion showman. Larry Reiling Kenny Keegan Don Bowden also noted. Larry Stoh won 4-H safe tractor drive contest.
A Mobile County Alabama group visits Iowa August 19 and 20 for farm and business tours. Joe Givhan announces the itinerary coordinated with Iowa State extension supervisor Russell Swenson. The schedule includes visits to Frank Hasencleder Grandview Richard Viere Cedar Mahaska farms, dinner at Oskaloosa, overnight in Ames, and tours of agronomy beef and swine facilities, a soils lab, a boat testing station and campus.
In Vinton, 130 calves sold at the Benton county 4H auction averaging 27.29 per hundredweight. Top prices were 30.25 for a Hereford owned by Marion Sick Blairstown and an Angus owned by Kaye Pollock Mt. Auburn. The champion Shorthorn owned by Mac Scott of Vinton sold for 30.00. grand and reserve grand champions were not sold.
The Iowa State Employment Service office in Cedar Rapids reports a farm labor shortage with 11 married positions offering 170 to 300 dollars monthly plus housing and extras. Seven single positions pay 125 to 180 dollars monthly with board room and laundry provided.
Gary Kruse of Marengo won the individual market pig championship with a Hampshire breed entry. Gene Schumacher, also of Marengo, exhibited the champion pen of market lambs. Breed champions included Holstein Richard Stutzman Brown Swiss Linda Wilcox Milking Short horn Florence Wilson Ayrshire Joyce Herdlicka Guernsey Harlan Betz Jersey Douglas Miller.
The House Ways and Means Committee shelved the administration proposal to close a farm cooperative tax loophole until next year. Chairman Wilbur D. Mills said no action would occur without public hearings and hearings are tentatively planned for early next year. The plan would require cooperatives to allocate earnings as cash or market value notes redeemable in 61 years at 4 percent interest.
ElKader Iowa. Robert Grau a saw mill operator and chairman of the Iowa tree farm committee reports Iowa now has 90 posted tree farms covering 6242 acres of timberland. To qualify a landowner must keep at least 10 acres of native hardwoods or 3 series of pines under management and protect crops from grazing fire insects and disease. The program is sponsored by the Iowa Forest Industries Committee the Iowa Retail Lumbermen's Assn and the Iowa Bankers Assn forestry committee.
Gladbrook hosts the Tama County fair where Kathy Beale of Buckingham showed a 910 pound Hereford to grand champion honors in 4 H baby beef. A 930 pound Angus exhibited by John Putney of Gladbrook took reserve champion. Beale also claimed the Breeds champions with Shorthorn and Hereford. Other champions listed include Carole Minish Dysart reserve Hereford, Joe Vande Walle Tama reserve Shorthorn, and Dennis Emke Toledo reserve Angus amid 211 baby beeves and 21 purebred beef heifers.
Chicago AP reports estimated livestock receipts for Monday totaling 8 000 hogs 18 000 cattle and 1 500 sheep for the market period.
