Regulation Steps Signal Shift In Stock Market Control
The administration shows limited interest in stock speculation while enacting gradual regulation. Notable moves include the 1933 Banking Act giving the Fed power over bank loans on collateral and to curb loan growth, a Senate inquiry into stock exchange trading, higher federal taxes with reduced exemptions on market dealings, raised margin requirements and tighter customer controls by the exchange, and provisions in the securities bill to regulate sale of new securities.
