Bread price rise blamed on middlemen not farmers
Undersecretary John Schnittker told a House subcommittee that bakers and distributors contributed more to rising bread costs than wheat. He noted wheat prices rose modestly while farmer pay remained low, saying the farmer’s share of bread in 1965 was only 13 percent. He cited city price variations and urged that other factors drive retail bread costs. A National Farmers Union spokesman disputed blame on both farmers and millers.
