Iowa landfill fee error could forfeit state revenue
DES MOINES AP An error in the groundwater protection bill scrapped the 25 cent per ton landfill fee, risking about $750,000 in uncollected fees. The law hikes dumping fees to 1.25 dollars by July 1 1988 and to 3.50 by 1992 to fund groundwater protection. Landfill operators say they include the fee in rates and may not pay the state. The Iowa DNR says the current fee was not intended to be erased and may still be collectible. A Des Moines landfill lawyer gave no decision yet on paying an estimated 100000 dollars yearly in fees.

River level rising then expected to drop quickly on the Mississippi
The Mississippi River in Iowa and northern Missouri is falling to a 12 year low due to dry weather. Army Corps official Robert Faletti warns boaters to stay cautious as levels drop from 8.8 to 6.8 feet in Dubuque and from 7.5 to 3.4 feet in Rock Island Davenport. Hazards appear on river edges with wing dams and submerged obstacles threatening hulls and propellers. Low water may trap fish in shallow areas.
