Gazette photographer L W Ward found outdoor enthusiasts already busy at their pursuits in an early morning town round. At night Bud Lowe of Marion and Wayne Blessman fish over the First Avenue bridge, extending the day’s edge to evening.
Three Linn County law enforcement officers were assaulted Thursday and Friday while attempting to arrest suspected drunk drivers. David H. Feldman, 23, of rural Olin, was arrested after a Mount Vernon officer stopped his car on Highway 30 in Lisbon. Feldman allegedly struck at officer Jim Strother and faces assault, interference with official acts, and drunk driving charges. In a second case, George A. Paulson, 32, of Hiawatha, allegedly assaulted two officers after a short auto chase that began on Northwood Drive. He was charged with two counts of assault plus drunk driving and interference with official acts, along with speeding and related offenses. Neither officer was seriously injured.
Earl J. Wiley 48 of 1531 Bever Ave SE was arrested just after 1 AM on second degree kidnapping after luring Sherry P. Shatzer 25 to his apartment, using a starter pistol to force her to stay, firing one shot. Shatzer fled to a friend's home after firing two shots at Wiley.
Four persons were arrested and charged with drunken driving late Thursday and early Friday in Linn County. Charles D. Stanton 28 of Pro tivin was taken near 3 a.m. Friday on Seventh Avenue Marion. Wayne L. Davis 34 of 936 11th St NE was arrested at 2 26 a.m. Friday on I 380 Cedar Rapids and faces speeding and equipment violations. Charles T. Smith 37 of 155 Robins Road Hiawatha was arrested at 2 20 a.m. Friday at 42nd Street and Edgewood Road NE. Rena C. Stanislaw 30 of 2230 Mount Vernon Rd SE was arrested at 10 23 p.m. Thursday in the 800 block Fifth Ave SE.
