Food Supply Might Stem Higher Food Prices This Year

The Bureau of Agricultural Economics says abundant supplies should keep food prices from rising much in 1951. Price ceilings under the defense production act may limit increases, with some widening of farm to retail spreads. Beef prices could dip briefly during heavy marketing, but strong demand may prevent large declines. Overall civilian per capita consumption is expected to edge above 1950.

Oats Yield Near Forty Five Bushels Per Acre In District

Average oats yield has been around 45 bushels per acre with better fields at 50 or more. Moisture runs 13 to 15 percent and test weights are mostly 36 to 38 pounds per bushel. Little new oats are being sold while some old corn remains marketed after earlier wind and hail damage.

REA Reports Big Gain in Use of Power

WASHINGTON INS The Rural Electrification Administration said on Tuesday that power use on REA financed lines rose 25 percent in fiscal year. Officials noted borrowers along 1.1 million miles of lines now distribute twice the 1948 level and triple the 1947 figure as demand grows. About 117,000 miles were energized and an estimated 750,000 farms remain without service.

Farm Youth Tour Visits Cedar Rapids Overnight

Thirty nine Iowa farm youths on a six day 1050 mile tour visit Cedar Rapids September 20 21. They will attend a Chamber of Commerce dinner and tour the Cherry Burrell plant before continuing to Waterloo Ottumwa and Des Moines elements of the Iowa Development Commission and Iowa Farm Bureau Federation organize the trip led by Horace G Hedges in Cedar Rapids.

Scientists Battle X-Disease Across States

Washington reports agriculture scientists have made progress by producing X-disease in cattle under controlled conditions. Symptoms include appetite loss, dull mood, eye tearing, slobbering, and skin changes. No single feed or compound causes the disease. an unknown contaminant or agent is suspected. Research continues at ten state stations to end the threat to cattle nationwide.

Beef Industry Warns of Black Market Beef Flow

The AMI reports that during nine weeks ending recently beef purchases by 95 leading producers dropped 62.44 percent from a year earlier while cattle receipts fell 17 percent, signaling diversion to other than normal channels and maldistribution amid price controls.

Soils Laboratory Has Record July Throughput at ISU Cedar Rapids

The Iowa State College soil testing laboratory in Cedar Rapids processed a record 659 samples in July, new manager William Bennett reports. In July 1950, 335 samples were tested. July 1949 had no operation. Through July 1950, 2,448 tests compared with last year, and 300 samples were received in early August, hinting at another record month.
