Mercer Jokes With Officers On Way To Death Row
Special to The Gazette Tipton Ohio. John Mercer told Sheriff Christian he was smarter than most people as he was taken to Fort Madison to spend the last year before his death. He spoke of death on the gallows and asked about details while showing no fear of dying. He wept at a letter about his mother's death and remained composed in court. Mercer’s ally Wain Kile, serving life for the Sproat murder, was moved by Mercer’s sentence. Mercer claimed his mind was freer and noted his August birth and August 20 1937 death date. He described an early army service, a 1930 killing, a Bahamas escape, rum running rumors, and a fatalist view of fate.
