North Liberty installs license plate readers for city use
North Liberty began installing 12 license plate recognition cameras to detect stolen cars and Amber or Silver alerts. A policy must be approved and staff trained before alerts begin. The $40,000 purchase was approved, with annual costs of $35,000. Vendor Flock Safety says the system captures plates, not occupants, deletes data every 30 days, and is not a traffic enforcement tool unless reporting a violation to dispatch or a neighboring jurisdiction.
