Gulf dead zone worsens from agricultural runoff in Iowa study

The Gulf of Mexico dead zone expands as algae blooms deplete oxygen, driven by nutrients from Midwest corn and soybean farming. Iowa State University research shows rotating crops to alfalfa and oats with limited fertilizer cuts runoff by up to 60 percent, improving soil and reducing erosion without hurting yields. Policy changes and market incentives needed for broader adoption.

University tuition rises amid cost pressures across Iowa system

A cost per student study shows rising costs from 2013 to 2015 at UI and ISU with a 14 percent jump at UNI. Regents cut $29 million from three universities amid a downshift in state funding, prompting a 5 percent tuition increase for resident undergraduates and the formation of a five year plan and a tuition task force to avoid last minute rate hikes. ISU already uses differential tuition in five programs, including biology and computer science, to cover higher instructional costs. UI President Bruce Harreld notes a low admin-to-instruction ratio of 0.136, below the national average, as evidence of cost containment.
