Former Kalona Elementary School secretary Ruby Kern pleaded guilty in Washington County District Court to first degree theft and reckless use of fire. The plea followed an agreement that dropped felonious misconduct of office. Kern faces a 10 year jail term with five years probation and restitution of 14729.04 plus costs. a six month suspended sentence and $250 fine for reckless use of fire. Sentences are concurrent and Kern must perform 200 hours of community service.
