Rogers Advocates Early Excellence In Cedar Rapids Schools

Dan Rogers, candidate for at large on the Cedar Rapids Community School Board, told the EX Club at Stouffer's that excellence starts in elementary schools. He urged smaller class sizes and stronger parental and citizen involvement as the Sept. 13 election approaches.

Ray Named Honorary Chairman for Iowa Vietnam Reunion

Former Iowa Governor Robert Ray will serve as honorary chairman of the Iowa Vietnam Veterans Reunion set for August 26 to 28 at the Roosevelt Hotel. About 2,000 veterans are expected for meetings and social events with Dennis Joyner of Apollo, Pennsylvania delivering the banquet keynote. Shad Meshad will discuss veterans readjustment and lead group sessions, presenting the origins of Vietnam veterans centers.

Des Moines Vietnam Veterans Memorial Plan Discussed

Cedar Rapids delegates from the state Vietnam Veterans Memorial Commission, Des Moines and Sioux City veterans centers, and major veterans organizations gather to discuss a planned memorial in Des Moines. Attendees will receive a computerized cross reference of participants by service date and unit, and there will be discharge status upgrade information. The three day meeting includes a Friday dance, Sunday pig roast at Legion Park Marion, and Sunday memorial services. Registration is $10 for all three days, banquet $10, Sunday picnic $5. Roosevelt Hotel offers packages from $46 per person one night to $90 per couple two nights, including activities, breakfast and cocktails. Pre-registration via Roosevelt at 364-4111 is requested.

Three contestants competed in a Cedar Rapids money grab aiming for $1 vouchers from a 1 001 spread. Norwest Bank Cedar Rapids and Marion funded the event. John Kuhn won with 166 dollars while Steve Twohig and Rob Flanagan collected 115 and 109 dollars.
