A Pekin distillery fire forced evacuations as civil defense teams arrived amid fears of further blasts. Two dead, four missing, and 27 injured as explosions shattered rackhouses. Loss of 110000 barrels of aging whisky and plant damage drove costs into the millions.
Thunderstorms drenched the state bringing soaking rain to dry southeastern Iowa while a north central system caused severe damage near Marshalltown and Clemons. Reports show Sigourney 1.24 inches and Oskaloosa 2.14. hail damaged greenhouses and upended trees as power outages hit Clemons and Albion. Ames WOI-TV knocked off air by lightning. Temperatures ranged from 72 to 106 as weather officials predict clearing skies tonight and a mostly fair Friday with potential western Iowa rain by weekend.
Lansing AP report says Dr. Albert E. Heustis, Michigan health commissioner, announced that state health laboratories have developed what he calls the first known cure for typhoid fever, an antibiotic named synnematin.
Cedar Rapids detectives identified the vehicle that struck and killed Joseph Benda. Bernard Early owned and drove the car the night of the accident, and hair samples from the undercarriage matched Benda’s hair color and texture. Early cooperated with police and turned over the car, while investigators note Benda was dragged beneath the vehicle rather than ejected on impact.

Cedar Rapids approves plans to repair the A avenue viaduct under railroad jurisdiction with a total cost near 100000. City will pay half, four railroads the rest, with work to begin within two weeks and take at least six months. The 381 foot structure, closed May 11 for unsafe conditions, is due to reopen around February with strength to handle heavy traffic.
William G. Karston and his half-brother Almer Anderson were found guilty of first degree murder in the July 25 robbery killing of Wendell W. Jones on a Pulaski farm. Karston faces execution August 15 1955 at Fort Madison while Anderson receives life imprisonment after district judge H C Taylor presided.
Vice President Nixon named a six member Senate committee to probe Senator McCarthy and consider censure proposals. Members include Watkins Carlson Case Johnson Stennis Ervin, with Fulbright and Knowland outlining expected functions and procedures.
Authorities seek Robert Anderson a dark haired slender man who escaped from a reformatory during morning outside work at Deputy Warden Brown residence. He was sentenced from Hardin county in May 1951 to 10 years for breaking and entering.
Stephen Sember a Linden resident in a trailer asked the city council why he has not been billed for taxes. He noted ten years in trailer camps nationwide and questioned why Linden should be different. The tax committee promised to investigate.
