Court to hear arguments in Cargill rail yard case
A state senator's lawsuit challenges Cedar Rapids City Council decisions on a $6.5 million rail yard for Cargill. The Iowa Court of Appeals will hear oral arguments Sept 9 at 10 30 a.m. The case involves rezoning and land use map changes for 28 acres at Stewart Road SE near Rompot and Prairie Park Fishery.

Anamosa inmate to plead in deadly hammer attack case
Court documents show Anamosa inmate Thomas Woodard 39 will plead Friday in Jones County District Court for first degree murder second degree kidnapping and attempted murder in the hammer attack that killed prison guard Robert McFarland 46 and nurse Lorena Schulte 50 during a March 23 escape attempt. Co defendant Michael Dutcher 28 seeks bench trial and may claim self defense.

Gregory Allen Showalter 61 of Ottumwa turned himself in at the Wapello County center after Elizabeth Showalter 60 was found dead in the Des Moines River. Investigators reported foul play and charged Showalter with first degree murder and being a felon in possession of a gun.
