Iowa researchers link nitrate pulse to runoff and Gulf dead zone
Burgin and Ter ry Loecke from Coe College and the University of Iowa study the 2013 nitrate pulse moving from fields through tile drains to the Cedar and Iowa rivers. The flood of nitrogen, worsened by drought in 2012, feeds Gulf hypoxia, drawing EPA reductions and debate over Iowa’s nutrient plan and farm practices.
