Springville firefighters doused a mattress fire started by a child at 169 Fourth St North. Firefighters said flames had spread the walls and were nearing the roof when extinguished. The home suffered smoke and water damage. the child and mother escaped unharmed.

Linn-Mar residents filed a petition with about 650 signatures to force an instructional support levy onto the September 11 ballot. The measure could raise up to 10 percent of the district budget for up to five years without a vote, with the levy lasting up to 10 years if approved by voters.
Ground was broken Friday morning for the 97,000 square foot St Luke's Medical Plaza at 10th Street and A Avenue NE. The four story building will link to St Luke's Hospital and provide space for OB GYN Associates P C and Pediatric Associates of Cedar Rapids P C to move in. It will also house outpatient laboratory services.
