Former Iowa National Guard commander Maj. Gen. Joseph May, who turned 56, was found guilty on 15 charges related to flights he took in Guard aircraft to visit his fiancee. The verdict followed 18 hours of deliberation over two days, with flights mainly to Florida and one to Las Vegas. May resigned and agreed to repay the government for plane costs.
Gov. Robert Ray appointed Thomas M. Horan a Marion attorney as judge for the Sixth Judicial District. Horan, 44, a partner in White Stone and Horan, will serve an initial term to 1980 with a $43 500 annual salary. The district covers Tama, Benton, Linn, Jones, Iowa and Johnson counties.
The United Auto Workers call a special Chrysler division meeting to consider a two year wage and benefit freeze as Chrysler seeks relief after heavy losses. Chrysler asks for a government aid plan including stock ownership and advance tax credits amid a 9.7 percent domestic market share.
House Speaker Thomas O Neill seeks to curb gavel to gavel broadcasts as five to six million homes watch daily. He calls speeches after business hours a waste of time and tax dollars and may push turning off cameras during special orders.
