Washington reports the defense department established strict occupational deferment standards for reservists and guardsmen. Army navy and air force final say on calls to active duty, with six month deferments that can be renewed but may be terminated anytime for military needs.

Three Fined at Vinton For Using Throw Lines

Three Eastern Iowa fishermen were fined in Vinton for using throw lines north of Highway 30 and possessing 24 illegally caught catfish. Lawrence A. Fish of Urbana Robert Eckhart of Van Horne and Lloyd Hendryx of Center Point each paid 100 and costs. Hendryx had 75 suspended as he did not own the lines and was a guest. They were arrested about midnight Wednesday by Conservation Officers four miles east of Vinton on the Cedar River.

Kill Bill To Take Extension Role From Farm Bureau

The House Agriculture Committee voted 17 to 8 to defer action on a bill to separate the American Farm Bureau Federation from control over agricultural extension services. Farm Bureau opposed the measure while Farmers Union and National Grange supported it. Extensions are funded by federal, state, and local funds. Proponents argued the Farm Bureau should not influence a federally funded agency.

The Senate approved a 55 to 31 vote to trim about 530 million dollars from a 32.75 billion dollar non defense spending package for the current fiscal year. Santa Monica AP. John Henry Grant, 32, an aircraft engineer, was convicted on six counts of attempted murder for placing a gasoline bomb in his wife Betty’s luggage aboard a United Air Lines plane. Truman Backs Hutchinson and Switzer If They Fight
