Penicillin Seen As Livestock Disease Control

Raleigh AP reports veterinarian Dr. William Moore of the North Carolina Department of Agriculture says penicillin could match its human medical success in treating livestock diseases. Mastitis in dairy cattle has responded to crude and sodium penicillin with minimal udder reaction, potentially lowering dairy losses and feed costs by improving feed utilization and combating parasitic infections. If ongoing tests confirm results by next spring, penicillin may become a major tool for dairy herds and pork production economics.

Push Early Pigs For Fall Market Says Quaife

E L Quaife extension swine specialist at Iowa State College advises pushing early farrowed pigs to 200 to 240 pounds for fall marketing. Despite a spring production dip easing winter gluts, price support programs and transport issues favor crowding early farrowed pigs. February and March farrowings should reach 150 to 175 pounds, with late 1943 fall pigs still at these weights. Keep feed access, confine pigs for late August and September markets, provide thick noon slop, shelled corn soaked overnight, and add a little alfalfa or clover hay daily.
