Iowa tax collections under the new federal budget balancing law totaled 51 342 19 for June 21 to July 1. Bank check tax led with 25 590 47, followed by stamp taxes 8 552 34 and real estate conveyances 7 972 58. Electric energy and telecom taxes were noted as not reflecting true potential.
Cedar Rapids resident August Roettmer was arrested at 2:50 a.m. on a breaking and entering charge after being caught leaving a Belle Plaine motor company garage. He waived to the grand jury and is jailed on a 2500 dollar bond. No goods were stolen and the same garage had a prior break in three weeks earlier with 25 dollars taken.
West Union resident Ruth O. Hidinger traveled to Reno Nevada for a wedding. She wed J Armand Brooks of Wishman Nevada on July 27 after leaving West Union July 25. The bride, a high school scholarship student and Rainbow Girls member, is the daughter of Charles and Mrs. Hidinger. The groom, a West Union native and 1930 graduate who later attended Upper Iowa University, is the son of Mrs. Harry Raney.
Election of officers by the Pythian Sisters and Knights of Pythias of Iowa concluded a joint meeting. W T S Rath of Ackley was chosen chancellor of the grand lodge, A F Grensing of Muscatine vice chancellor, and Mrs Mary Knoblauch Emmetsburg president with Lavinia Forsythe Cedar Rapids vice president. Other officers include Des Moines secretary Ward Ferguson, Wellman treasurer W B Webster, Nashua prelate L H Rohde, and guards C William Neff Mount Vernon. Trustees named are Sam G Wilson Fort Dodge Lars P Nelson Aurelia and Albert C Oetzmann Eldridge.
Des Moines publisher Henry A. Wallace warned of a possible fifteen percent increase in commodity prices within four months if confidence is shaken by any major upset. He urged that inflation could be driven by the Republican administration and cited two problems: currency fundamentals and agriculture’s difficulty under global conditions.
Iowa reports show 154915.46 dollars paid in wild animal bounties across 94 of 99 counties in the year. Gophers yielded 126808.88 dollars at 10 cents per head while wolves and cubs returned 10604.14 dollars and overall costs reached 17502.44 for other animals.

Grundy Center hosts the third annual Grundy Garden club flower show in the First Baptist basement across two days. Seventeen exhibitors competed in forty five classes with J R Albright of Cedar Falls judging. Gladioli prizes went to Albright eight firsts followed by Callaway and Brown. Local residents and Beaman participants praised for entries and prize sponsorship came from area nursery and greenhouse businesses.
Depositors of the closed First National Bank in Iowa City will receive a 40 percent dividend within two weeks, totaling about $220,000. The checks have been sent to Washington for signature after authorization by J. W. Poole, then comptroller of currency, with creditors still filing claims.
Mount Vernon Mrs Albert Johnson wife of the newly elected head of the Cornell college speech department has been chosen for part time work in the commercial department. She is a Redlands graduate with B M degree and has done graduate work at USC. She has training in coin banking and secretarial work and plans to teach piano for children. Bernice Keene of Waterman Illinois has been chosen as student assistant in physical education.
Plans are completed for the Secesh school picnic in E. B. Cantonwine grove near the school in Benton township six miles east of Vinton. Speakers Rev. S. S. Smick and John Tobin open the program at 11 am, followed by a basket lunch and activities including old fiddlers, races, and a fifty year old closing day school program presided by Herbert Dickinson.
Joseph Hudson aged 90 died Sunday evening. Military funeral services were held here Tuesday afternoon with Rev. Craig Tenney officiating. Singers Willow McKnight and Eva McCalley performed Beautiful Isle of Somewhere and Going Down the Valley. World War veterans served as pallbearers including Bert Hudson J A Kayser Frank er and Elmer Bare. Burial followed in Walker cemetery.

Dr. I E Melhus of Iowa State College urged Wild Life School students to name ferns seen in the woods as they would name people. He noted fern varieties like maidenhair and bracken and said many specimens in fern hollow are over 100 years old and may live longer if civilization preserves them. He also praised fern hollow as Iowa’s largest bed of interrupted fern.
Des Moines AP report says Roy Mercer arrested in Oklahoma City is not the man sought in the slaying of R. G. Sproat, Tipton vigilante. Iowa investigators compared descriptions received from Oklahoma City police and found no match. Sproat was killed August 8, 1930, during an attempted car battle by bandits.
Mrs. Charles Fairbank drowned fishing near Gull Lake Minnesota in May last week. Funeral services set for Thursday at Barnhart and Johannsen funeral home with Rev. C D James officiating. Born March 1 1886 near La Porte City she was daughter of Mr and Mrs Freeman Haislett and first married to Peter Witt.
Carmi Crossett aged 26 and his 15 year old wife were brought back to Washington county Iowa in custody of a deputy sheriff after Crossett was arrested near Davenport on a charge of abduction of his wife. Crossett had worked on a Washington county farm for three years before marrying a month ago and taking his wife to Scott county. The parents obtained a warrant once they learned of their daughter’s whereabouts.
Prof. A. Craig Baird of the University of Iowa announces an international debate with Irish speakers to be held at the University of Iowa during the last week of October in Iowa City.
Cyrus Metcalf and his Cedar Rapids Gospel team join Dr. A L Murray of Minneapolis to conduct a union service Sunday at 8 in the Blairs town Methodist church. Dr Murray has previously spoke here during Cedar Rapids residence.
Tama County supervisors trimmed the 1933 budget with a projected net saving of about 19653 if approved at the August 17 hearing. Reductions include 3375 for fair grounds and 16873 for bovine tuberculosis, with various increases and decreases across general court expense poor relief state insane and road funds. The board seeks 3500 to cover county poor bonds to be sold this year.
The Fayette county Medical association held its regular semi annual meeting in Clermont with about sixty percent attendance. Visiting physicians from adjacent counties joined hosts Dr L L Carr and Dr I C Jerdee. Dinner was by St Peter's Catholic church for 100. Clinical work led by Dr L E Cooley and speakers included Dr L C Kern Dr Schmidt Dr Carr and Dr C C Hall.
Vinton Lions club members heard a talk at their regular luncheon by Dr Waldo Glock formerly of Vinton now based in Tucson Arizona. He is connected with the Carnegie Institute and is visiting his parents Mr and Mrs John Glock.
The Rev. T. J. Lew assistant pastor of St. Patrick's Keokuk will become dean of discipline at St. Ambrose college Davenport and start duties in September. Rev. William F. Lynch St. Peter's Keokuk will succeed him in Keokuk. The Rev. Martin J. Dismond from Keokuk becomes in charge of Mercy hospital work and related institutions in Iowa City.
In Des Moines Sheriff Charles Keeling and a deputy pursued several alleged gamblers near Wakonda course. The pursuit prompted the officers to fire several bullets over the heads of the fleeing suspects, narrowly missing the golfers who had been playing nearby.
South English obituary notes the death of Mrs. Josie Britton Thompson age 83 at her daughter's home Mrs. Fred Newsome after a brief illness. Surviving are three children Henry Thompson of Dubuque Mrs. Fred Newsome of South English and Miss Margaret Thompson of Oakdale.
Frank P. Manley of Traer files suit in Tama county against Farmers Mutual Hail Insurance of Iowa seeking 600 and costs. He says his Ford sedan valued at 600 was insured for theft and collision and was stolen in Traer on March 12 1932. The company denied liability about March 28 1932.
Randalia Garden club plans a flower show August 16 in the Randalia high school gymnasium with refreshments in the afternoon and a short evening program. An out-of-town judge will preside and three grand awards will be given for best exhibit, best poster, and best essay on What My Flower Garden Means To Me.
David Goldstein of Boston will give an outdoor lecture next Saturday at 7 45 p m in Prairieburg. The tour also includes Independence Manchester Delhi Monticello Anamosa Vinton and Central City.
