Supreme Court ruling classifies co op buildings as residential property
The Iowa Supreme Court ruled 6-0 that properly organized residential co-ops must be taxed as residential property, not commercial. The case Krupp Place 1 and Krupp Place 2 Co-ops versus the Jasper County Board of Review involved two buildings leased by Krupps who did not reside there. The decision may affect tax revenue as cities and counties weigh legislative fixes, with Iowa City having denied several co-op conversion requests in recent years.
