Iowa uses 2.5 billion federal recovery funds across health care education and more. Medicaid funding totaling 421 million sustains services and avoids cuts, while 40 million helps 190 million aid payments to districts prevent teacher layoffs. Weatherization funds reach 7 200 to 9 300 homes, with transportation funds at 384 million.
The Iowa Department of Transportation awarded contracts totaling just over 1 billion dollars in fiscal 2009 using American Recovery Act stimulus funds. In 2008 the department let contracts worth 643 million dollars.
A new Pediatrics study shows injuries among American children in physical education classes increased 150 percent from 1997 to 2007. Experts attribute much of the rise to reduced adult supervision, fewer school nurses, and larger classes, with boys more prone to cuts and broken bones and girls more prone to strains and sprains.
Des Moines reports that four Iowa Board of Pharmacy hearings begin August 19 to weigh the medical use of marijuana with a view to potential legislative action. Barbara Douglass, 53, who has multiple sclerosis and uses a scooter, says marijuana eases her condition and notes she is legally blind.
The Iowa Pharmacy Board will hold four public hearings to review scientific data and collect comments on medical marijuana. Sessions run Aug 19 in Des Moines, Sept 2 in Mason City, Oct 7 in Iowa City, and Nov 4 in Council Bluffs. Details are on the Iowa government website.
